Why the hours are not the useful number
At most attractions the opening times tell you when you can turn up. Here they only tell you the window inside which slots exist. Reservation is compulsory for every ticket type, including the free ones, so a wide-open Wednesday afternoon is no help at all if every slot in it is taken. If your trip includes a Monday, put the Last Supper on any other day and give Monday to something that opens. Working out on the morning itself that the refectory is shut is the most avoidable disappointment in Milan.
Picking a slot
Early and late slots tend to be the ones still available when the middle of the day has gone, and neither is worse: the room is climate-controlled and lit the same way at 08:15 as at 18:30, and the cap is forty people regardless. What you get is identical — fifteen minutes either way. Tour departure times work the same way, so book the tour whose slot suits your day rather than the one that looks best on paper.
